King Charles surprises Pope Leo with cheeky joke during historic royal visit

King Charles met with Pope Leo in the Vatican on Thursday. The two held private meetings during the day and even prayed together. As many know, Charles is not shy of cracking jokes, and the same went for when meeting the Pope.

King Charles and Pope Leo spent Thursday together in the Vatican. It was the first time the king met the new pope after the American was elected earlier this year.

Not only did King Charles and Pope Leo make history with their first meeting. Moreover, they, the leaders of the Church of England and the Catholic Church, prayed side by side in the Sistine Chapel.

It was a historic moment, as it’s been more than 500 years since an English sovereign last prayed side by side with a pope. Charles, therefore, became the first reigning British monarch to pray with a pope publicly since Henry VIII in 1534.

King Charles cracks joke with Pope Leo

King Charles has been known as a “funny guy,” as he often jokes and laughs with those he meets, whether they’re a president, a member of the public, or, actually, a pope.

When they met inside the Vatican, Charles pointed to the cameras recording and joked that they were a “constant hazard.”

Pope Leo responded, “You get used to it.”
