‘CSI’ STAR GARY SINISE’S SON WAS PARALYZED FROM CHEST DOWN YET KEPT DOING HIS ONE FAVORITE THING

Tragically, Mac Sinise, the son of Gary Sinise, passed away at the age of 33 following a prolonged battle with a rare form of cancer. The Gary Sinise Foundation issued a heartfelt tribute on January 6, 2024, announcing Mac’s passing.

On January 23, 2024, Mac was laid to rest, prompting Gary to reflect on his son’s courageous struggle against an incurable illness. Gary, known for his role in “CSI: New York,” expressed profound pride, gratitude, and a sense of blessing for having been Mac’s father.

In a poignant tribute, Gary shared memories of Mac’s life, highlighting his passion for drumming, which began at the tender age of nine. Mac’s exceptional talent saw him stepping in as a drummer for Gary’s band, the Lt. Dan Band, performing at various events including “CSI: New York” wrap parties.

Recalling those cherished moments, Gary fondly remarked, “Those were some great times, father and son rockin’ out together for the troops.” However, their family was rocked by adversity when both mother and son were diagnosed with cancer within months of each other.

The summer of 2018 brought significant challenges as Gary’s wife, Moira Harris, battled stage 3 breast cancer, undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Tragically, on August 8, 2018, Mac received his own devastating diagnosis of Chordoma, a rare cancer originating in the spine.

Gary delved into research, discovering the rarity of Chordoma, affecting only around 300 individuals annually in the United States. While some cases allow for successful treatment, Mac faced a daunting prognosis with a high risk of recurrence.

Fortunately, Moira’s cancer went into remission after treatment, but Mac’s journey was fraught with hardship. Despite initial surgery to remove the tumor, subsequent procedures and scans revealed the relentless progression of the disease.

Even amidst his health struggles, Mac remained dedicated to his role at the Gary Sinise Foundation, where he served as Assistant Manager of Education and Outreach. His responsibilities included managing archives, organizing events, and engaging with military personnel and their families.

Mac’s resilience and commitment to service continued until his health declined further after a third spine surgery in November 2019. His passing marked the end of a valiant battle against a relentless adversary, leaving behind a legacy of courage and unwavering dedication to others.

Gary observed that Mac Sinise’s friendly demeanor left a positive impression on visitors at the Gary Sinise: A Call-to-Action exhibit, as well as on participants in various local and national events.

The actor emphasized how Mac’s presence on the team was a true blessing, highlighting his unwavering commitment to the foundation’s mission and the individuals it served. Gary eagerly anticipated witnessing his son’s growth and progress within the organization.

Mac’s infectious enthusiasm infused joy and pride into the foundation’s activities, particularly during events like the Soaring Valor gatherings, honoring WWII heroes, and the Invincible Spirit Festivals, where the Lt. Dan Band lifted the spirits of wounded veterans nationwide.

Gary fondly recalled accompanying Mac on trips, where his dedication to their cause was palpable in every interaction. “I was excited to see him evolve within the organization,” Gary remarked.

Reflecting on Mac’s determination, Gary recounted how even during his recovery at home, Mac remained dedicated to advancing the foundation’s goals. Despite facing personal challenges, Mac eagerly contributed to the launch of the Gary Sinise Foundation.

His commitment was evident in his efforts to conduct interviews, despite undergoing medical procedures and treatments. However, recognizing the importance of prioritizing his health, Mac temporarily stepped away from foundation duties in January 2020 to focus on his recovery.

Gary acknowledged Mac’s decision, understanding the necessity of his full attention, especially with upcoming medical procedures. As Mac continued his battle against Chordoma, his loved ones rallied to support him through initiatives like “Team Mac,” aimed at funding research for treatments.

Mac’s health declined further when the cancer left him paralyzed from the chest down, robbing him of his ability to play drums and piano. Undeterred, Mac revisited his passion for music, reviving a composition from his college years titled “Arctic Circles.”

Despite his physical limitations, Mac persevered, collaborating with musicians and friends to bring his piece to life. With determination and ingenuity, he continued to pursue his love for music, embracing new instruments like the harmonica under his mother’s suggestion.

Mac’s resilience and creativity shone through his unwavering pursuit of his musical aspirations, serving as a testament to his indomitable spirit amidst adversity.

Gary found inspiration for Mac’s musical journey from his friend Sammy L. Davis, a Medal of Honor recipient and harmonica player.

After showing Mac a video of Sammy playing “Shenandoah,” Mac was motivated to learn the tune and mastered it beautifully.

Impressed by Mac’s rendition, Gary suggested arranging strings to accompany him. Since Oliver was already orchestrating “Arctic Circles,” Gary proposed including “Shenandoah” as well.

This collaboration ignited Mac’s vision for an entire album titled “Resurrection & Revival,” focused on revitalizing old or unfinished works. Despite the burden of cancer, Mac remained committed to his vision, and his efforts bore fruit as the full album will soon be available.

Excited to share his creation with the world, Mac’s joy was cut short as he passed away the same week the album went to press.

However, he celebrated his last birthday during a recording session at Blackbird Studios, where Harry Connick, Jr. surprised him, adding an extra layer of joy to the occasion.

Gary had not publicly addressed Mac’s battle until his live interview with Raymond Arroyo on December 29, 2023.

Sadly, the day after the interview, Mac was rushed to the emergency room due to breathing difficulties, leading to his admission to the hospital.

Despite initial stabilization, Mac’s condition worsened over the following days. On January 5, 2024, surrounded by his family, he peacefully passed away.

Expressing gratitude for the support received during their difficult time, Gary’s family thanked Mac’s caregivers and highlighted his deep devotion to his Catholic faith, which provided him strength throughout his battle.

While mourning his absence, the family finds solace in Mac’s resilience and the knowledge that he is now free from suffering. Inspired by his courage, they remember him as a soldier who refused to surrender, even in the face of an insurmountable battle against cancer.

Though Mac’s loss is deeply felt, his family takes comfort in knowing that he is at peace, his enduring spirit a source of inspiration to all who knew him.
